Dr. Laura Wexler, MD
Dr. Wexler is a professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She has received many awards for teaching, including the Samuel Kaplan, M.D. Visionary Award, the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, the Leonard B Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, and the Women in Cardiology Mentoring award from the National American Heart Association. She served as cardiology section chief at the Cincinnati VA hospital for 11 years. She served as PI in five national VA clinical trials.
She served as Interim Chair of the Cardiology division of University of Cincinnati Medical Center and was then appointed to Sr. Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Admissions at the College of Medicine.
She led UC to become the first medical school in the country to adopt the “Multiple mini-Interview” system for medical student selection, a more holistic approach to medical student selection which emphasizes humanistic skills and qualities. She developed summer courses and mentoring programs for high school and college students to stimulate interest in careers in medicine. Dr. Wexler is now focused on teaching at all levels, and providing care for the expanding and increasingly complex VA patient population. She remains the co-director of the medical student cardiovascular curriculum at the COM.
Dr. Wexler has served in several leadership roles with the American Heart Association and with the American Board of Internal Medicine, serving as chair of the cardiovascular board and subsequently on their board of directors and executive committees.
Dr. Wexler has been a Visiting Professor at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Baylor College of Medicine.
